In the shimmering
radiance of the Thar Desert, the glistening sandstone has prominently
moulded Jaisalmer into a desert wonderland. Once Jaisalmer was a formidable
desert land, but today it's a place of inlaid magic. The sunset has got a
particular glow over here and as the night descends - the Golden City glows
with a peculiar flavour.
The best places to look around are Lodurva, which is the ancient capital of
Jaisalmer. 'Toran' or the ornate arch at the main entrance and Jain temples
stands as an indication to its ancient tradition. Another point of
attraction is the divine tree, 'Kalpataru'. Amar Sagar is an amusing place,
beside a lake with mango and other fruit trees. Enchanting the aura are the
mildly carved temples.
Bada Bagh is a place admist densely grown trees and a gushing stream are
the royal cenotaphs with elaborate carving on the ceiling and ethnically
patterned images of former rulers on horse back. Sam Sand Dunes is the
closest place for a visitor to become a signatory to the total sandy desert.
The Wood Fossil Park contains round about 180 million-year-old fossils. The
Desert National Park has got the Great Indian Bustard breeding
location & exotic wildlife.
Festivals are rejoicing in Jaisalmer with
Holi, 'the festival of colors', the celebration of which touches its peak.
The vivacious spurting of the colored water and the powder on one another is
the highlight of the festival In the 'Jaisalmer Desert Festival' the
desert itself comes throbbing to life, pulsating to the rare pastoral
display of art and culture. At the full moon night a sound and light drama
is performed at Sam.
Though Jaisalmer is a feast for the eyes than anything else, one can carry
few souvenirs and treasure them for life. Beautiful embroidery in a
brilliant mosaic of colors, patterned with tiny mirrors on garments, linen
and pouches. It's also used for decorating the camels. There are traditional
rugs, blankets and shawls in typical Rajasthani colors and weaves.
Jaisalmer has got an extreme climate. The best time to visit this place is
from October to February.
