History
Udaipur is known as the city of lakes and is also one of the most romantic
cities in Rajasthan. Udaipur, the city of dawn was founded in 1559 AD by
Maharana Udai Singh. It is a lovely land around the azure water lakes with a
fascinating blend of sights, sounds and experiences. Its kaleidoscope of
splendid palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes carry the flavor
of a heroic past epitomizing valor and chivalry.
Places of interest City Palace :
Erected by Maharaja Udai Singh, the elegant City Palace is a marvel
in marble, situated on the banks of Lake Pichola. Explore the majestic
architectural marvel that houses many courtyards, pavilions, terraces,
corridors, rooms and hanging gardens. The main entrance is through the
triple arched gate with eight marble porticos. The 'Mor Chowk' reputed for
its exquisite peacock mosaics in glass and the 'Chini Chitrashala' noted for
its blue and white ceramics are other attraction in the palace.
Fateh Sagar : Fateh sagar is a man-made lake built by
Maharana Jai Singh in 1678 to the north of Lake Pichola. Spend some time
around this beautiful lake that is overlooked by a number of hills on the
three sides and the Pratap Memorial on the north. Enjoy a boat cruise as you
approach the Nehru Park, which is a lovely garden island located in the
middle of the lake.
Lake Pichola : Maharana Udai Singh II significantly
inflated the gorgeous Lake Pichola as a security measure, when he founded
Udaipur. Hills, palaces, temples, bathing ghats and embankments surround the
picturesque lake. Two island palaces, Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas (Lake
Palaces) on the lake are breathtaking magnificence. South of the palace, a
pleasant garden runs along the lakeshore. Enjoy a boat cruise, which leave
regularly from the City Palace jetty.
Saheliyon-ki-bari : (Garden of the maids of honor)
On the shores of Fateh Sagar Lake, a lovely garden was built for the 48
maidens destined to be a part of the dowry of the princess. This small
ornamental garden was a popular relaxing spot where royal ladies came for a
stroll and hence the name came into existence. It has many fountains,
chiseled kiosks and marble elephants that are sure to leave you spellbound.
Excursions Eklingji : Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the beautifully
sculpted temple complex dates back to ancient time. It houses 108 temples
within its high walls. The walled complex also encloses an elaborately
pillared hall or 'mandap' under a large pyramidal roof and has four-faced
image of lord Shiva in black marble that makes it a distinct place to visit
and offer prayers.
Jaisamand Lake & Wildlife Sanctuary : Have a time of
your life on this stunningly beautiful lake that is the second largest in
Asia. Graceful marble chattris that flank the embankment and beautiful
summer palaces built on the either side of the lake multiply its beauty in
manifolds.
Jaisamand Sanctuary is situated 50 kms south of Udaipur the picturesque
city of lakes verdant valleys and hills. A trip to Jaisamand Wildlife
Sanctuary allows a close encounter with the rich wildlife that includes
panther, wild boar, beer, four-horned antelope, mongoose and countless
species of migratory birds.
